On April 7, 2025, international law firm Herbert Smith Freehills and the Australian National University released the Japan-Australia Investment Report 2024, an annual analysis on investment trends between Japan and Australia. The report announced that direct investment from Japan into Australia reached a record-breaking AUD 141.1 billion (approximately JPY 13 trillion) in 2024, driven primarily by the real estate and energy sectors.
There were 72 mergers and acquisitions (M&A) involving Japanese companies—a 17% increase from 2023—including 62 acquisition deals. Amid a worsening housing shortage in Australia, Japan became the second-largest foreign investor in the real estate sector, with an estimated investment of over AUD 3 billion. In addition, 55 new partnerships were concluded between Japanese and Australian corporations, local governments, and universities, highlighting the continued growth and deepening of Japan–Australia relations.
With ongoing global trade tensions by the Trump administration in the U.S., the report suggests that Australia is increasingly viewed as a “stable investment destination” for Japanese investors moving forward.
